In the world of science, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is synonymous with “excellence.” It fosters groundbreaking fundamental science that enables transformational solutions for energy and environment challenges, using interdisciplinary teams and by creating advanced new tools for scientific discovery. Research areas include Biosciences, Computing Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Energy Sciences, Energy Technologies, and Physical Sciences.
Berkeley Lab’s User Facilities provide state-of-the-art resources for scientists across the nation and around the world. About 10,000 researchers a year use these facilities, representing nearly one third of the total for all Department of Energy Office of Science User Facilities. These include the Advanced Light Source (ALS), Joint Genome Institute (JGI), Molecular Foundry, National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), and the Scientific Networking Division - Energy Sciences Network (ESnet).

Preparing the Advanced Light Source Injector Complex for the Accelerator Upgrade
The 2023/2024 ALS winter shutdown continues work toward the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project. ALS-U is an ongoing upgrade of the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at Berkeley Lab that will endow the ALS with revolutionary x-ray capabilities. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for three decades. Recent accelerator physics breakthroughs now enable the production of highly focused beams of soft x-ray light that are at least 100 times brighter than those of the existing ALS. Applying this technology at the ALS will help us to better understand and develop the new materials and chemical systems needed to advance our energy, economic, and national security needs in th...

Science in Motion: Stashing Carbon for the Long Haul with Healthy Soils
Просмотров 6062 месяца назад
A key solution for carbon capture and storage is under our feet. We’re investigating the interactions between plants, microbes, and geological features in soil with the goal of using healthy soil ecosystems to pull carbon from the atmosphere and stash it underground for a long time, at a low cost. The Center for Restoration of Soil Carbon by Precision Biological Strategies, or RESTOR-C, brings ...

16 Elements: Berkeley Lab's Contributions to the Periodic Table
Просмотров 5923 месяца назад
A century ago, the periodic table looked much different than it does today! It had blank spots throughout, and the entire bottom row - the actinides - were not even part of the table as most of those elements did not exist in nature and had not been created in the lab. But researchers theorized their existence. And starting in the 1930s scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - or, ...

Berkeley Lab Asks: What’s Your Favorite Element?

Did you know that the periodic table turned 150 this year? To celebrate the anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev’s revolutionary scientific breakthrough, Berkeley Lab asked young attendees at the 2018 Bay Area Science Festival in San Francisco to tell us their favorite elements. The answers, given by elementary school kids to high school teens, assure us that the future of STEM is as bright as its i...

Hola. Gracias. Saludos cordiales desde México
Some good content, but not a very good teacher/lecturer
Science has come a long way since our friend the 'Bunsen burner'...
Impressive :) in which year was this interview? Atomic power was just in Einstein imagination or was it discovered already?
I love you 😢❤

Can you not coat pre-existing structures, such as river beds etc?
This guy speaks the blunt truth about that GSA mess.
Josh Harnet portrayed Ernest Lawrence in the movie Oppenheimer. He was the one that built that giant apparatus that led to an experiment verifying nuclear fission was possible. They barely showed it. What a wasted opportunity that was. 🤦

3 Nobel winners recently looked at the graph of storms/floods/droughts etc, and said, "The FLATTEST line I have ever seen!" Further, the IPCC itself admits, "There is NO increase in storms/floods/droughts." Hansen was admonished by the US Gov for not revealing hos method in arriving at World temperature, and for its OBSCURITY! Alarmists are mediocre; liars; cheats; bullies.

Great lecture! I will say this though… Joe says he’s never received a call from a client complaining “my building is leaking air”. Perhaps that’s the reason architects haven’t been drawing detailed 3-D “air control barrier” drawings…until VERY recently. But many DO draw detailed 3-D roofing and waterproofing drawings…often done by highly paid and skilled consultants. Yes…”bulk water” from rainfall and ground will always be the highest priority. It’s like going to the hospital. The first and foremost issue will be infection control, antibiotics and acute care. Meanwhile nobody will care about your metabolic health and the hospital snack-bar will be full of processed food that can lead to diabetes…20 years down the road.
Her last comment... no pharmacy company is going to dish out that money for no profit. There will be an event
One thing that is supposed to be good is magnetic therapy. I mean you can pick up these tiny magnetic "dots" for next to nothing, if you want. And this anecdote is true. So, I got some MRIs for some injury. After the MRIs, for the first time in my life, I developed skin tags. About six months later or something, I started using magnetic therapy for my injuries. The skin tags just went away. And that is what they are purported to do, that magnetic therapy can reverse damage from a variety of EMF. And, I saw it personally. And, you know, not just my personal experience. And, you know, it makes some sense that the thing that can counter an EMF, is in that realm of physics...
Is this good for someone who has had a CT SCAN. I’d be interested to know more about this.
Incredibly intelligent and courteous conversation!
Brilliant presentation... love it everytime Joe speaks. :) You can't argue with good sense (unless you're an architect apparently... lol) Glad that some of these basic ideas/principles he has been advocating for years are FINALLY starting to catch on!
I love this series of history of the Lab. Can't get better than some of these oldies but goodies.
The lecture at the Q&A at the end is about the best I've heard in 20 years.
The presenter shared some informational gems. While most of the audience interactions were like farel cats. Aggressive, interrupting, yet completely clueless on the subject matter. They kept interrupting the presenter mid sentence. G D no wonder the bay area is the shit hole that it is. A little glimpse into this audience interaction and it's no coincidence their city is such a dump. Loud mouth know-it-all attitude, interrupting the speakers. Yet they know absolutely nothing about building science. That audience was filled with idiots. It at least the ones that opened their filthy yappers.

He is legitimately very, very funny. Brilliant dry, acerbic sense of humour coupled with brilliant, common sense information.
I don't like how these old people want to fight with him. I think there's more hope with the younger generation.
